Trawler Slips

Slip needs for displacement and semi-displacement cruisers

From the dockmaster's desk

If you called five marinas about trawler slips, you'd get five different answers — not because anyone is hiding the truth, but because every harbor runs on its own contracts, depths, and storm policies. This page is the version we wish every dockmaster had time to give a first-time caller.

Trawlers — from 34 ft Marine Traders to 60 ft Nordhavns — are built for long-range, fuel-efficient cruising. Their slip needs sit between sailboats and motor yachts: moderate draft, real beam, and serious shore-power demand.

Most cruising trawlers draw 4–6 ft and carry 14–18 ft of beam. That puts them in standard 16–18 ft wide slips, but the bow pulpit and aft cockpit often extend the dock footprint beyond the LOA listed in the registration — many marinas now bill 'documented LOA plus bow/stern overhang'.

Liveaboard-friendly marinas are the default home base. Trawler owners tend to be full-time or seasonal cruisers needing pump-out, 50 amp service, mail forwarding, and laundry — the same checklist as long-term liveaboards.

Power draw is real. A 42 ft trawler with reverse-cycle AC, washer-dryer, and electric galley needs reliable 50A 240V service, not 30A. Always confirm pedestal amperage and metering — billing surprises are common in older marinas.

Trawler Slips — FAQ

Why are trawler owners often liveaboards?
Trawlers are designed for extended self-sufficient cruising — galley, head, AC, generator — so making one a primary residence is a small step. Many marinas with good liveaboard culture cater to trawler crowds.
Do trawlers need a covered slip?
Not usually. Trawler topsides are gelcoat over fiberglass and the cockpit is shaded — covered slips are a 'nice to have', not a requirement.
