Marina Booking Tips

Boat Slip Reservation Strategy: A 12-Month Planning Calendar

When to reserve transient stops, annual contracts, and seasonal moves — month by month.

Slip reservation is a calendar discipline. Marinas open their booking windows on predictable cycles, and the boaters who book on day one get the slip; everyone else gets the waitlist. Here's a 12-month rolling calendar that works for cruisers, snowbirds, and home-port owners.

January–March

Lock annual contracts in Florida for the following winter. Confirm summer New England transient bookings (July–August). Book Pacific Northwest summer cruises (June–September). Verify your home-port renewal is paid.

April–June

Book fall hurricane-haul agreements. Reserve Great Loop staging slips for the fall southbound run. Confirm Bahamas crossing marinas if planning a Dec–Feb transit.

July–September

Book next year's Florida winter slips (Nov–April). Reserve fall Northeast haul-out yards. Confirm any liveaboard slip transfers.

October–December

Confirm winter wet storage de-icer setup. Book transient stops for Loop / southbound migration. Reserve next summer's prime New England weeks.

Standing weekly tasks

Check cancellation list at your top three target marinas. Update Dockwa and Snag-A-Slip saved searches. Maintain a relationship with at least two dockmasters in each cruising region.

Frequently asked questions

Do all marinas use Dockwa?
Most U.S. transient-friendly marinas do; some still take only phone/email.
Should I prepay an annual contract?
If discounted, yes. Otherwise spread it monthly via the marina's standard ACH.
What happens if I cancel an annual contract early?
Most marinas pro-rate the refund minus a 30–60 day notice clause.
How far ahead can I book transient?
Most marinas open 6–12 months out; a few open 18 months out for premium weeks.
Can I hold a slip without paying a deposit?
Rarely — deposits are standard at 25–50% of the booking total.
